Chicago!

We took a trip to Chicago recently, tag-teamed with Sonja Thomsen's Historical Perspectives class - a big, comfy, coach bus full of MIAD photography majors.

The day began with a visit to the Art Institute Chicago, where we saw an amazing Lewis Baltz show, as well as a big exhibit of work by Henri Cartier-Bresson. Some peeled off to Central Camera, others ate, then we all regrouped for a meeting with photographer Jason Reblando (above, top). Jason's project work is impressive and he talked about his path of making work from his time in graduate school. We all loved looking at big work prints from his New Deal Utopias series.

We headed next to Catherine Edelman Gallery, where we had a nice chat with Assistant Director Juli Lowe and took in the show by Shana and Robert ParkeHarrison. The gallery does a nice job of creating artist videos, so the following week in class we watched the ParkeHarrisons talk about their unique processes.

Our final stop of the day was at the studio of Kelli Connell (above, bottom). It was fascinating to hear Kelli discuss her Double Life series - it's initial birth as a project, her creative work process, the collaboration with her model and the thoughts about the lifespan of the project.

From there we heading back up I-94, past the Mars Cheese Castle, and home.
